This graceful lady was my grandmother. She was born in 1903 and must have been in her late teens/early twenties when this was taken. Her name was Elizabeth and she grew up in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. For me, this portrait has always conjured up the era of the silent movie stars!!
There are only two people in my life who have called me beautiful and she was one of them. As I recall the other was someone trying to get me into bed…… but I digress 😂😂😂
I can remember the conversation with my grandmother as if it was yesterday….. I had wandered into her bedroom (she lived with us from time to time) and as she pushed my hair back from my face and tucked it behind my ear she said I shouldn’t hide my face as it was beautiful. She went on to say that perhaps I should consider a career as an air hostess…. to be an air hostess to my grandmother was the height of sophistication and glamour!! I seem to remember I wanted to be an astronaut!!
Anyhow, she called me beautiful and it has a profound affect on you when you’re younger. I tell my son how much I love him and how gorgeous he is all the time, so much so that he’s probably bored of hearing it but I never want him to have any hang ups in that department.
So why am I telling you this? Well……. one of the biggest fears I have from clients is that they aren’t beautiful or photogenic enough to have their portrait taken.
And I can fully appreciate why!! Yes, you might not be as slim as you’d like. You may have a few wrinkles starting to appear here and there. You might not have looked your best under the grotty yellow light at last year’s family Christmas get together… with the incredibly unflattering angle you were shot you from. (I don’t know about you but I swear my boyfriend always manages to shoot me from an angle that makes me look the size of a hippo!!!!)
But just think how sad it would be if your kids look back one day for pictures of your family and you're not in any of them.
So please don’t worry about not being photogenic or beautiful enough….. there is honestly no such thing!!! You’ve just never had a proper portrait taken by an experienced professional photographer.
It's my job to capture you looking your very best.
And I do this by looking for the most flattering light, shooting from good angles, capturing natural expressions and most importantly connecting with you. Ask any of my past clients and they will tell you how much fun they had on our session. So much so, that you forget about your niggling worries and concerns and your just relax, laugh and your face lights up.
And this is when you look your most beautiful……
